Reconnecting with Our Roots
Inspired by Braiding Sweetgrass
When we begin to reconnect with the Earth, we start to remember all that she does for us — and all that we are within her. Beneath our feet lies a living web of roots, whispering and weaving messages through the soil. These networks look strikingly like the human brain — sending information, offering nourishment, and supporting the plants we walk among.
Plants give us food, medicine, shelter, oxygen, and beauty. The deeper we remember this relationship, the more gratitude blooms within us. We begin to see the sacred in the simple — a cattail offering food, bedding, and even a soothing balm for sunburn. One small plant, infinite gifts.
Listening to the Earth
As we listen, we learn that the world around us is alive with reciprocity. When we give, the Earth gives back — in ways far greater than we can imagine.

“What a wonderful joy it is to see,
The beauty of nature and its majesty.
Everything blends, entwines and embraces,
Spaced precisely in their designated places...
Ours to have, cherish, and protect,
Not to pollute, take for granted, nor neglect.
Enjoy the earth, treat it kind —
After all it is ours, yes… yours and mine.”
How to Give Back to Mother Earth — Daily Acts of Reciprocity
Prayer
Prayer doesn’t need to be religious. It can be a poem, a feeling, a soft moment of gratitude. Speaking love to water — as Dr. Masaru Emoto’s work shows — can crystalize it into more harmonious forms, carrying healing energy to the plants that drink it.

Music
Plants respond to sound. Soft vibrations — like singing bowls, guitar, or gentle singing — encourage growth and vitality. Imagine serenading your garden with a love song written just for it.

Volunteer
Join community clean-ups, plant trees, or simply tend to a neglected patch of soil. Each act adds to the collective healing of our shared home.
Compost & Recycle
Returning our food scraps to the Earth nourishes the soil. Choosing glass, bamboo, or hemp over plastic honors sustainability.
Donate or Support
Give to organizations that protect forests, clean oceans, or restore native ecosystems.
Offerings
Many cultures offer small gifts before harvesting plants — tobacco, flowers, or songs. Offerings are acts of humility and reverence — a way to give gratitude and receive mindfully.
Finding Your Own Way to Give
There are endless ways to give back. Feel into what feels genuine for you — maybe it’s art, song, tending the soil, or simply living with awareness. When you offer your heart through your natural gifts, your mana — your life-force energy — flows in harmony with the Earth’s rhythm.
“Each act of care, no matter how small, is a prayer.
Every word of gratitude becomes nourishment.
As we give back to the Earth,
we remember we were never separate from her —
we are her voice, her breath, her hands.”
